This auction is for one of a pair of Bogdan Salmon Number 0 reels that were owned by businessman John C. A. Watkins. Watkins was a decorated WWII fighter pilot. In civilian life he started before the war as a reporter, then worked his way up to CEO of The Providence Journal. He expanded the circulation of the Journal by more than 500% and added radio and cable TV stations to its holdings. His passion was Atlantic salmon fishing, and these reels accompanied him on trips to many of the finest destinations in the world.
The reels have been used, and the rims are engraved to J. C. A. Watkins Providence, but they seem to be in excellent operating condition in all respects. The salmon number 0 is a 2 to 1 multiplier. The backing capacity is 150 yards of 20-pound dacron plus a 9-weight line, which is enough, but could easily be expanded to more than 200 yards of 30-pound spectra. These reels are right hand retrieve. We have conflicting information of whether they can be switched to left hand retrieve, so bidders who care about that should research it on their own.
The other of this pair of reels will be in the live auction of the MSA US Winter event being held Feb. 5 at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth, ME. People buying a ticket to the event can also participate in that auction via zoom. A motivated buyer could own this matched pair of reels and outfit him or herself with Bogdans for the 2022 salmon season. Here is a link for more information and to purchase tickets.
